People of Vietnam believe that their ancients come from the
dragon. When the country was established, the people of Vietnam had to face the
colonizers from the North that attacked through the ocean. Vietnamese Emperor
named Giok then asked the Mother Dragon and her children to help the people to
protect the kingdom.
According to the story, the Mother Dragon and her children
did not come back to the heaven, but stayed on earth as human beings. In order
to commemorate their service, the people of Vietnam then gave the bay name as Ha Long bay. In addition, the bay where
the dragon children landed were named as Bai Tu Long which means ‘thank to the
dragon children’.

There are around 1,600 people living in several floating
villages on the bay. The people are very skillful to make unique weapons and
tools such as axe for farming and hunting. They are also good at making
beautiful ceramic products.
Since long time ago, the people living on the bay work as
fishermen. However, since the bay is open for tourists, many of them work as
tour guides or ferrymen. Unfortunately, in 2012, there were many tourists
visiting the bay and caused damage such as water pollution. It caused damage
for the ecosystem of the bay.
