History of Jeronimos Monastery
To show his gratitude to Virgin Mary regarding the success
of Vasco de Gama to sail to India, King Manuel I of Portugal build a great
monastery in 1946. The construction of Jeronimos Monastery began in 1501 and
funded by the treasures that were gained from explorations in Asia, South
America, and Africa.
The architects who worked on the project include Diogo de
Boitaca and Joao de Castilho. The site of the sacred tourism was on the banks of Tagus River. It was previously a
small chapel which was built for St. Mary of Belem. King Manuel I then invited
the Order of St. Jerome to live in the monastery. The organization was
well-known in terms of their spirituality, productive knowledge output, and
same political view as the King.

The style of the building is very unique and has the
combination of Flamboyant Gothic, Moorish, and the influence from early
Renaissance. It employs sculptural details which include maritime motifs. The
main entrain is the south portal which was designed by Joao de Castilho. From
there, the visitors can see the great statue of Henry the Navigator.
Mosteiro dos Jeronimos has the tombs of King Manuel and
other members of Portuguese royal family. One of them is Vasco de Gama, the
famous explorer from Portugal. There is also a freestanding Chapel of St.
Jerome which was built in 1514.
